Ticking Clock for Affordable Connectivity

January 19, 2024 — As the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) approaches a critical funding deadline, millions of Americans relying on subsidized internet and mobile services face the possibility of disconnection unless Congress intervenes. Established to help low-income households stay connected, the ACP is now on the brink of exhaustion, with funds projected to dry up by April 2024. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes and how they could affect your access to digital services.

Eligibility for the ACPThe ACP extends its benefits to individuals participating in federal assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, and SSI. Households may also qualify based on income. With the program’s potential closure on the horizon, those not yet enrolled are urged to apply immediately to maximize their benefits before the enrollment window shuts.

Impending Closure of the ACPWithout new funding from Congress, the ACP will cease to provide discounts after April this year. The countdown has already begun for current recipients, who will continue to receive benefits until the cut-off date. New applicants must hurry; the final deadline to apply through an internet provider is February 7, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST. Applications can be submitted online at getinternet.gov, with a process time of about 10 minutes.

What If You’re Already Enrolled? For households already benefiting from the ACP, service providers will start sending notifications in late January about the impending changes to billing and service continuation. If you do not opt out or switch plans, you might automatically revert to paying standard rates post-ACP. Households will need to decide whether to continue with their current provider at a higher rate, switch to a more affordable plan, or discontinue services entirely without penalties.

Exploring AlternativesFor those impacted by the ACP’s potential end, the Lifeline Program remains an alternative, offering up to $9.25 off monthly phone and internet bills. It’s a crucial lifeline for maintaining connectivity in a post-ACP scenario.

Staying InformedThe importance of staying updated cannot be overstated. Recipients should monitor emails, texts, and mail from their service providers detailing the transition. The ACP Support Center is also available for queries at 877-384-2575. For ongoing updates, check the USTD site, where future developments regarding the ACP will be posted as they unfold.

As the deadline nears, the call for congressional action grows louder, underscoring the urgency of securing future funding for the ACP. The program's conclusion could significantly widen the digital divide, leaving many without essential services that have become indispensable in our digital age.
